How to prepare wood shavings to use as substrate?

a friend gave me some wood shavings to use as a substrate (leftovers from their wood work project)

— I would like to use them as a substitute for saw dust in this substrate recipe I used for growing reishi —

800g saw dust
400g hemp husks
250g wheat bran
40g gypsum
3l h2o distributed to 3 bags

but I’m wondering do the wood shavings need some extra preparation to be digestible? any tips for using wood shavings as substrate?

according to the source, this wood is:

some pine some spruce

but mostly pagoda tree / philosophers tree and black locust
